https://www.amazon.com/Brave-Volodymyr-Story-Zelensky-Ukraine/dp/0063294141

Synopsis: Volodymyr Zelensky wanted to make Ukraine a better, kinder, more joyful place. Born to Jewish parents, Volodymyr had much love and pride for his country. Growing up, even with Ukraine's various conflicts, he liked to make people laugh. After university, he became a comedian and actor. But he knew humor wasn't enough to fix his nation's ongoing problems. So, in 2019, he ran for president -- and won!

Leading with honesty, heart, and humor, President Zelensky stood up for what he believed in, no matter how tough the situation. And when Ukraine was invaded, he bravely defended his country, the Ukrainian people, and their right to freedom at all costs.

"Brave Volodymyr: The Story of Volodymyr Zelensky and the Fight for Ukraine" by author/biographer Linda Elovitz Marshall and artist/illustrator Grasya Oliyko, features an author's note, an educational timeline, and more. This powerful nonfiction picture book account beautifully captures President Volodymyr Zelensky's journey to office and Ukraine's fight for truth and independence amidst rising tensions and Russian invasion.

Critique: Given the attention paid by the media and the United States involvement with respect to the Russian/Ukraine war and the heroic role played by Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, this picture book biography is especially and unreservedly recommended -- especially for family, daycare center, preschool, elementary school, and community library collections for children ages 4-8. https://www.amazon.com/Lone-Wolf-Goes-Library-Thomas/dp/082345780X

Synopsis: Wolf's library book is overdue, and the librarian says if it's not returned today, he will never ever be able to check a book out again. Wolf loves books. He can't let this happen.

Even worse: the book is due by the end of story time. Story time means tons of children having noisy fun. Can Wolf get to the library in time while avoiding his nemeses (other people) and preserve both his books... and his sanity?

For young readers who have had enough of the buddy duos, for those kids who'd rather play by themselves -- Wolf is the antihero they have been waiting for! Lone Wolf Goes to the Library is another hilarious early reader starring the completely lovable, chronically grumpy Wolf, a character who affirms kids who fly solo better than with friends. Kids who are beginning to read on their own won't be able to get enough of Kiah Thomas's sarcastic stories, perfect whether read alone or out loud, and K-Fai Steele's laugh-out-loud illustrations will give any kid, no matter their reading level, a new favorite series.

Pear Tree Publishing
9781625020635, $10.95

https://www.amazon.com/Elf-Dust-Ms-Nancy-Merrill/dp/B0DZW3PSVB

Picture book readers interested in elves will relish the bright, magical drawings of Colleen Sgroi and the inviting writing of Nancy E. Merrill in Elf Dust.

It's the Christmas season, and the North Pole is experiencing its busiest time of year. A rollicking rhyme captures this holiday bustle as the story surveys Santa's workshop and the challenge of assuring that naughty and nice children are appropriately noted. This is where the elves come in, checking up on children and observing them as they play so that toys can be appropriately provided.

How can a child know that invisible elves have been checking up? Because the elves can't help but leave "sprinkles of twinkle" (elf dust) behind!

Embedded in this picture book journey for read-aloud adults is an invitation to look for the hidden "elf slippers" throughout the tale. It also promotes the magic of creating glitter art (if adults decide to follow through on the craft opportunities within the story). For a different take on Christmas, Elf Dust offers a magical journey that is appealing, easy to understand, and fun to explore.

Read-aloud parents and classroom teachers seeking a Christmas celebration will find its whimsical elves thoroughly inviting: "They will leave a small trace, something only elves sprinkle. Like candy on ice cream, it's a part of their twinkle."

Astro

9798893389043, $21.95

https://www.amazon.com/Astro-Manuel-Marsol/dp/B0CSV6WHX6

Astro is translated from the Spanish by Lizzie Davis and delivers a first-person story in which the narrator "no longer remembers exactly when Astro came to visit... it was a long time ago. Maybe thousands of years." As the strange being introduces curiosity and friendship to his environment, what opens as an engaging story of perhaps an alien encounter turns into something much deeper, asking questions such as "what's the point of being alive?"

Read-aloud adults will want to interact with the very young to properly explore all the themes of friendship, adaptation, loss, healing, and discovery which are embedded in this seemingly simple (but not really) picture book story of connection and growth. The tale is not only surprising in the subjects it embraces, but is thoroughly engrossing. It deserves recommendation for its bigger-picture thinking... even bigger than most picture book readers are usually afforded.

https://www.amazon.com/American-Mystery-Dont-Doubt-Rainbow/dp/1785837281

Synopsis: The third book in the 'Don't Doubt the Rainbow' series by Anthony Kessel, "American Mystery", centers around the mystery first mentioned by Grandpa David at the end of "Outside Chance".

It is the school summer holiday, three months after Edie Marble faced off with the eco-terrorists. Grandpa David is unwell and has asked his son, Edie's dad, to bring the family to Canada to see him (possibly for the last time) although he doesn't mention that he's already secretly reached out to Edie. In Toronto, Edie uncovers a dark secret from her family's past that has been buried and seemingly forgotten about, but when Grandpa David starts receiving strange messages from an unknown number, the truth finally comes out...

Yet again, Edie sets off on an exciting adventure, this time to discover who has been contacting her grandpa and why. Along the way, she visits Washington DC and the Outer Banks of North Carolina before a dramatic climax in Dartmoor. Can Edie once again uncover a hidden crime and bring the perpetrators to justice?

Throughout "American Mystery", Anthony explores how things are not always what they seem - how our 'thinking' often represents our imagined reality rather than what is necessarily true - and examines the nature of the link between thoughts and feelings. In so doing he gives readers the tools they need to understand their thoughts and emotions better and to connect with their inner wellbeing so that they can live happier, more fulfilled lives.

Synopsis: The world ended ten years ago when Vampires showed up, took over, and turned the whole planet into their personal all-you-can-drink buffet. The president? Bloodsucker. The government? Bloodsuckers. My social life? Absolutely nonexistent.

But hey, at least I had one thing going for me -- slayer training. My twin sister, Ripley, and I were about to go pro, officially joining the ranks of the last people on earth who actually do something about the whole "Undead Overlords" situation.

And then X had to show up. The vampire boogeyman. The worst of the worst. And instead of killing Ripley, like any decent monster would, he turned her. Now she's technically a vamp, but something tells me my sister is still in there. Which means I can't slay her.

What can I do? Break every rule. Lie to my friends. Strike a deal with the most dangerous vampire on the planet: X will protect Ripley from everyone else who wants her dead (like, really dead) until I can snag the cure for vampirism. The catch? Risking my own head to help him free his good-for-nothing BFF from the very slayers who taught me everything.

If I want Ripley back, I'm going to have to play nice with the thing that ruined my life. And the worst part? -- I think he's enjoying this.

Allison, You Are Beautiful is an engaging picture book lesson in courage, self-image, and facing down bullies. It comes from the first-person experience of seven-year-old Allison, who is happy at her elementary school - until a boy from another class publicly teases her about her freckles. When all the kids join in, Allison is shattered. Her wise mother has a few words to say about the situation when Allison returns home in tears: "Many times people say and do mean things to us because it is a reflection of how they really feel about themselves." But Allison has a deeper question about why God has given her these ugly spots in the first place, forcing her to stand out.

Christian families, libraries, and young readers receive important introductory lessons about not just appearance and facing bullies, but learning about God's plans in creating seeming imperfection in the world. Allison's mother's ability to explain all this and support her daughter's innate sense of beauty shines a light of positivity on the story that helps parents and young listeners absorb vital lessons about not just their appearance, but their life purpose and intrinsic value as one of God's children. Delayna Robbins captures Allison's vibrant personality and world with realistic illustrations that draw young readers into her world. Erika Archer's ability to inject all these facets into an appealing story of how a girl and her mother handle not just adversity, but challenging spiritual concepts about God's intentions makes for a picture book that all kinds of Christian readers and collections will relish.
