9784805318614, $17.99, HC, 40pp
https://www.amazon.com/Hokusais-Daughter-Bilingual-English-Japanese/dp/4805318619
Synopsis: Whether working in his studio or out in the field, Japanese artist Hokusai had a constant companion -- his youngest daughter, Eijo. Wherever they went, Eijo brought along her own bag of brushes and the same artistic brilliance and passion as her dad. "Hokusai's Daughter" tells the story of a clever girl who refuses to believe that only men can create great works of art.
Told that she can't become an artist because she's a girl, Eijo sets out to prove everyone wrong. She's determined to become the proverbial koi that swims up the waterfall and becomes a mighty dragon -- fighting against the current to be the person she is meant to be.
Critique: Katsushika Oi (1800-1866), also called Eijo, created many remarkable artworks and had a hand in her illustrious father's later work. "Hokusai's Daughter: A Young Artist in Old Japan" is a beautifully illustrated and bilingual picture book story that celebrates the power of grit and artistic expression, as it introduces young readers to a trailblazing figure who, like her famous father, left a lasting impression in the world of art. "Hokusai's Daughter" is a timeless tale that teaches kids to believe in themselves and follow their passion. An original and fun bilingual (Japanese/English) read from cover to cover, "Hokusai's Daughter" is a unique, special, and unreservedly recommended addition to family elementary school, middle school, and community library Biography Picture Book collections.
Editorial Note #1: "Hokusai's Daughter: A Young Artist in Old Japan" includes an appendix to help parents share information with their kids about Hokusai (his influence and style) and his daughter Eijo, as well as traditions about koi and how woodblock prints are made. Samples of Eijo's work will include images from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Menard Art Museum, and the Tokyo National Museum.
Editorial Note #2: Sunny Seki (https://sunnyseki.com) is the author-illustrator of bilingual books on Japanese culture for children, highlighting the values of courage, selflessness, loyalty and determination as well as the value of art in the modern world. Specializing in traditional tales, he performs stories through puppetry, teaches Japanese poetry, and is a photographer as well as a writer and an illustrator. He has authored several children's books including the award-winning Yuko-Chan and the Daruma Doll and The Last Kappa from Old Japan.

Coal Dust and Dreams
M. J. Evans
Dancing Horse Press
http://www.dancinghorsepress.com
9781737361886, $12.95, PB, 210pp, Ages 13-18
https://www.amazon.com/Coal-Dust-Dreams-Horses-History/dp/1737361884
Coal Dust and Dreams is steeped in Welsh culture, history, and phrases. It follows the adventures of a girl and her pit pony, who work in the coal mines of Wales. Middle grade readers already familiar with Evans' intriguing method of pairing history with horses will find this latest adventure as thoroughly engaging and attractive as her prior books.
Here, a grandmother responds to her granddaughter's questions about Welsh history and pit ponies by narrating a tale of "unsung heroes" who worked in the mines of Wales in the 1930s (these would be the horses, as well as the miners.) Young Bethan opens the tale with an intention not to work in coal, but enter grammar school, which her parents have scrimped and saved for. As part of a poor Welsh family, this is a luxury.
M. J. Evans takes time to describe Bethan's home life and poverty, personalizing the Welsh atmosphere to set a stage that reveals her motivations, background, family influences, and the Welsh community. As Bethan becomes unexpectedly involved with mines and horses, her life radically changes from its set course. This introduces many challenges -- not the least of which is her growing affection for 'pit horse' Dobbin. Between stumbling into the world of horse competition to facing prejudice against girls who would dare compete in a man's world,
Bethan has her plate full as she hones a renewed vision of her future -- and that of Dobbin. She violates the prohibition of females working in the mines and then faces a choice between exposing her transgression and supporting Dobbin. Her ability to step up and into new responsibilities when family tragedy strikes both drives the story's history and underlying drama and lends it a realistic, compelling aura kids will find attractive and engrossing.
Coal Dust and Dreams may initially attract horse-crazy girls interested in equine stories, but to limit it to that audience would be to do the story a grave disservice. Its real-world background history, social and cultural insights, and lessons on perseverance, problem-solving, and confronting prejudice all give Coal Dust and Dreams a supercharged injection of value beyond the usual girl-and-horse tale. This is why Coal Dust and Dreams is very highly recommended for elementary-level libraries and middle-grade readers alike, who will find the absorption of Welsh history seamless as the story intersects with a vivid growth experience.

The 53 eerie, otherworldly origami models in this book encompass a broad range of items and themes including: Scary Creatures (from an intimidating Werebear and slimy Loch Ness Monster to the Deadly Spider!); Spooky Objects (including the Evil Tree Stump, the Enchanted Shroud and the Creepy Hands); Ghastly Remains (like the Disembodied Head and the horrifying Skeleton!); The Undead Horde (including the Zombie, The Face of Dracula and the unnerving Poltergeist); Magical Tools & Talismans (that you can wield, like the powerful Witch's Hat, the Shield of Invisibility and the classic Magic Wand!); Magic Tricks & Novelties (that will cut the tension with silly gags like the Springing Eyeballs and Wagging Tongue); The Medieval Armory (stocked with necessary gear like a razor-sharp Sword, a hefty War Hammer and a blazing Torch); Enchanted Creatures (proving that not everything is out to get you -- the Cat Familiar and Unicorn can be trusted companions); and The Treasure Vault (where you will finally receive the reward for your persistence -- a Treasure Chest brimming with Gems!).
These imaginative models are the perfect way to get kids excited about origami -- an activity that promotes creativity and develops spatial skills, patience and manual dexterity. These models are great fun to fold, to play with and to display -- even to trade or give away as gifts!
Critique: Impressively 'kid friendly' in organization and presentation, "Origami Monsters & Magic: Scary Creatures, Skeletons, Talismans, Weapons and Treasure - Plus Magic Tricks and Novelties!" is the ideal introduction to creating fantasy origami. Offering untold hours of fun, this lare format (7.3 x 0.5 x 9.9 inches, 14.4 ounces) paperback edition of "Origami Monsters & Magic" from Tuttle Publishing is especially recommended for paper craft enthusiasts and young origami fans ages 12-18. It should be noted that "Origami Monsters & Magic" is also readily available in a digital book format (Kindle, $15.19) as well.

Can Shadow the fox rescue an island of people? The only human she likes is Nan because Nan feeds her fish every night. But when Nan disappears, things get quite fishy. A man from Whistlenorth Island comes ashore looking for Bee, who it turns out is Nan's granddaughter. Bee and Shadow develop a special bond as they embark on an adventure together to help Nan and rescue Whistlenorth Island from greedy, destructive Night Islanders. Narrated by Shadow, Sorosiak's story is an intriguing and adventurous one. (Ages 8-12)

It's a typical day in a typical elementary school where there is always a popular girl and her groupies, as well as a child who is introverted, shy, and invisible. The reader will recognize these kinds of children and maybe even compare them to someone they know! There are happy moments and sad moments, and moments when the reader will say, "Oh thank goodness someone cared." It is a well-written narrative and although it is fictional, it portrays reality in so many ways. Nicely done! (Ages 8-12)

What a fun surprise to end up chuckling through this delightful book! Linda Harkey deftly leads the reader into a world where several animals, quirky and comical in character, are escaping from a trip to Cowlick Ranch where they may become, well ... a meal. When troubles and disasters punctuate their newly hatched plan to get to the Cow Retirement Ranch, situations resolve with a touch of humor and whimsy. Illustrator Jeff Yesh's use of a pleasing palette of turquoise as a backdrop works superbly to depict the landscape intended. (Ages 8-12)

Monitor lizards Zeke, Daniel, and Alecia are hall monitors in Principal Wombat's school in the newest release from the best-selling author of A Monster Calls. Their duties are to impose order on the other animals in the school... lions, seals, pandas, and an obnoxious school-bully pelican that has it out for the lizards. Together, with a blind red-tailed hawk, they attempt to protect their school of mismatched animals. Silly, hilarious, and filled with black-and-white illustrations. (Ages 9+)

Paul Robeson rose to prominence during the Harlem Renaissance, known for his extraordinary vocal, dramatic, and oratory skills. But he was a true Renaissance man: an accomplished athlete, a bright intellect, and a passionate supporter of humanitarian causes. This is a PERFECT discussion piece for students. The art design gorgeously captures Mr. Robeson's turbulent and unique life journey. (Ages 9-12)
