https://www.amazon.com/Show-Up-Vote-Ani-DiFranco/dp/059338377X
Synopsis: A young girl accompanies her mother to their local polling station and pays witness to the commonality of this
experience. Her mother gently reinforces the great responsibility and importance of this act, while the girl moves through
feelings of excitement, nervousness, and ultimately, invigoration.
Critique: With the publication of "Show Up and Vote", singer-songwriter, activist, feminist, and author Ani Di Franco has
penned a lyrical narrative for her youngest audience: a picture book about the eye-opening act of voting. Illustrator
Rachelle Baker adds an authentic neighborhood feel in a range of bright, bold colors and familiar faces, establishing a
realistic and relatable setting. An age-appropriate call-to-action for all young citizens, "Show Up and Vote" is especially
and unreservedly recommended for family, daycare center, preschool, elementary school, and community library picture
book collections for children ages 3-6 on the subject of voting in local, state, and federal government elections.
Editorial Note #1: Ani Di Franco (https://anidifranco.com) is a Grammy-winning musical artist and feminist icon
recognized for her poetry and songwriting, which pierces social convention and challenges the status quo, as well as for her
social activism and political engagement. One of the first artists to create her own record label in 1990, she has sold over
5.5 million albums through her own Righteous Babe Records, and recently released her twenty-second studio album.
While she has been known as the "Little Folksinger," her music has embraced many genres and collaborators ranging from
Pete Seeger to Maceo Parker to Chuck D to Prince. She lives in New Orleans with her family.
Editorial Note #2: Rachelle Baker (https://shelikescutie.com/artist/rachelle-baker) is a multi-disciplinary artist from
Detroit, MI with a background in Relief Printing, Illustration, Comic Art, and Music. Her work centers cultural infusions
of women. She is inspired by Shoujo manga, anime and comics bad girls, stoic women dancing in the backgrounds of late
90's/early 2000's R&B videos, and the sound cats make when they're yawning. She has been voting since 1998, when she
ran for 2nd grade student council secretary, and believes that it is important that people have both a voice and a
choice.

https://www.amazon.com/Truths-We-Hold-American-Journey/dp/1984837060
Synopsis: With her Democratic presidential nomination, her election to the vice presidency, her election to the U.S. Senate,
and her position as attorney general of California, Kamala Harris has blazed trails throughout her entire political career.
But how did she achieve her goals? What values and influences guided and inspired her along the way?
In this young readers edition of Kamala Harris's memoir, we learn about the impact that her family and community had on
her life, and see what led her to discover her own sense of self and purpose. The Truths We Hold traces her journey as she
explored the values she holds most dear - those of community, equality, and justice. An inspiring and empowering memoir,
this book challenges us to become leaders in our own lives and shows us that with determination and perseverance all
dreams are possible.
Critique: The edition of "The Truths We Hold: An American Journey" is adapted for young readers ages 12-15. This is
Kamala Harris's empowering and informative memoir about the values and inspirations that guided her life. Given her
current candidacy for the Presidency of the United States her life story is a timely and unreservedly recommended addition
to personal, family middle school, highschool, and community library American Biography/Memoir collections. It should
be noted that "The Truths We Hold" is also readily available in a paperback edition (9780593113172, $10.99) and in a
digital book format (Kindle, $7.99).
Editorial Note: Kamala D. Harris is the Vice President of the United States of America and now the Democratic nominee
for the Presidency. She began her career in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office, then was elected district
attorney of San Francisco. As California's attorney general, Harris prosecuted transnational gangs, big banks, Big Oil, and
for-profit colleges, and fought against attacks on the Affordable Care Act. She also fought to reduce elementary school
truancy, pioneered the nation's first open data initiative to expose racial disparities in the criminal justice system, and
implemented implicit bias training for police officers. The second Black woman ever elected to the U.S. Senate and the
first female, first Black, and first Indian-American Vice President, Harris has worked to reform our criminal justice system,
raise the minimum wage, make higher education tuition-free for the majority of Americans, and protect the legal rights of
refugees and immigrants.

Critique: Fun from cover to cover, this new edition of "Spooky, Scary Skeletons" is a singularly fun experience and an

Synopsis: The sun, the moon, and the rain have not been seen in the jungle for weeks, and everything is shrouded in a
prolonged night. The animals of the forest, both diurnal and nocturnal (whether they run, fly, or swim, whether they roar or
squawk) are deeply concerned. They no longer recognize their home and embark on a journey to discover why the dawn
has not come.
Through the poetic text and the emotive use of color, "Waiting for the Dawn: A Tale of Forest Fires and Renewal" by
author/illustrator Fabiola Anchorena draws the attention of young readers to the dire consequences of the Amazon's
exploitation and destruction, a phenomenon that has escalated in recent years due to the effects of climate change and
tragically makes headlines each summer.
Educational back matter created in collaboration with One Tree Planted will inspire both adults and children to
contemplate the growing threat of forest fires and support organizations that protect the forests, which are the Earth's
lungs.
Critique: With illustrations that are museum quality supporting a thoroughly 'kid friendly' and deftly scripted story text,

A Day at the Beach
Paul Padgett, author
Andhika Abhiramadhan, illustrator
Independently Published
9781959662037, $12.99 Paper/$8.99 eBook
https://www.amazon.com/Day-at-Beach-Squirrelsville-ebook/dp/B0D3YCKNQJ
Book 2 of the Squirrelsville picture book series follows the enterprising squirrels to the beach, where they walk out of their
lush forest world to explore a very different environment one lovely summer's day. Accompanied by an uncle and aunt
who have given them this opportunity, the enthusiastic little squirrels anticipate a day of sand castle building and fun.
While the beach delivers on these promises, it also is an ecological system that sports a very different environment than the
squirrels are used to.
The value of this story lies as much in their recognition of this different milieu's properties and its contrasts with the forest
as it does in it bow to choices the squirrels can make which enhance their visit, while being environmentally conscious:
"Aunt JoJo, will you please pack the Inial 8 mosquito spray and the ocean-safe sunscreen?" asked Uncle Paul. There are
plenty of 'a visit to the beach' picture book stories on the market, but this second in the Squirrelsville adventure series
stands out for this special brand of consciousness, and its attention to teaching kids that the beach is more than a big
sandbox.
Elementary-level libraries and read-aloud adults interested in early messages about environmental consciousness will
welcome the playful, uplifting, discussion-provoking nature of Paul Padgett's A Day at the Beach, supported by thoroughly
cheerful, engaging illustrations by Andhika Abhiramadhan.

https://www.amazon.com/Clouds-Space-Nebulae-Stardust-Us/dp/1536225371
Synopsis: Nebula means "cloud" in Latin, but these little-known astronomical phenomena are different from Earth's
clouds. They can be the last breaths of supernovas, spreading the elements of life far and wide, or they can be star
nurseries, swirling molecules together to form stars and planets.
"Clouds in Space: Nebulae, Stardust, and Us" by author Teresa Robeson and illustrator Diana Renzina is gorgeous
nonfiction picture book that looks into the cosmos, the nebula narrator inviting young astronomers to learn more about
these immense space clouds, from how they form to what they do.
Young readers will be entranced by the vibrant illustrations, which incorporate real photographs of nebulae, and the poetic
text, which reveals that we are all grown from scattered stardust. Rich back matter provides details about nebulae and how
people have studied them, the nebulae pictured in the illustrations (listed as the "cast"), and resources for further
learning.

https://www.amazon.com/Grandma-Spells-V-Grandchild-Grandchildren/dp/B0D6BCRCDF
In the picture book A Grandma Spells L-O-V-E, Sheri Poe-Pape opens with "Grandma spells l-o-v-e in so many ways."
What are those ways? That's what the story outlines as illustrator Nejla Shojaie adds colorful, large-size art to bring to life
not only a message of love, but how it's transmitted. In this story (narrated by a young observer), the grandmother has
"...waited a long, long time for brother and me."
Not only love, but patience and the acknowledgment that children are "a gift from God" present bigger-picture thinking
than the subject of love alone. This approach creates important discussion points between adults and children about the
nature and impact of love, and gifts that appear in many different ways.
Sheri Poe-Pape's story isn't unique in the realm of picture book stories of family love, overall, but its special attraction lies
in these larger observations of life and meaning that inject A Grandma Spells L-O-V-E with many topics and connections
perfect for family read-aloud participation.
Parents seeking choices that support family affection and togetherness will find that A Grandma Spells L-O-V-E achieves
both with its rhyming stories of a child's experiences of a grandmother's love. It's also very highly recommended for
elementary-level libraries seeking supportive celebrations of family connections.

"Mog and Tom" is a charming children's picture book story in the Humorous Healing Anagrams series by Leila Summers

displaced family making a home in the aftermath of war as narrated by a young refugee:
"We used to live in a big city. In our apartment window was a star-shaped lamp, shining through the cold. I could
recognize home from far away. But then the war began, and we left for another country. Everything is different here -- the
food, the language, even Mom and me. Today Mom bought us a package of scissors, glue, and cardboard. Can we make
this place feel a little more like home? "
"A Star Shines Through" is based on the experiences of the author-illustrator Anna Desnitskaya, who left Russia with her
family after the start of the Ukraine War. With an evocative palette of blues and yellows, Anna shows how making art can
create a sense of hope, even amidst emigration and resettling.
Critique: Featuring visual instructions on the making of a six-pointed star, "A Star Shines Through" is an emotionally
moving and memorable picture book that is unique and unreservedly recommended for family, elementary school, and
community library collections for children ages 5-9. It should be noted for personal reading lists that "A Star Shines
Through" is also readily available in a digital book format (Kindle, $18.04) as well.

Synopsis: Social anxiety, her parents' divorce, and messy friendships won't stop Millie's pursuit of what she wants -- in
roller derby or in love. But her own lies might.
Sixteen-year-old Millie Novak is stuck in an "if only" rut. If only she were stronger and faster, maybe her roller derby
teammates would take her seriously. If only she had the guts to go back to in-person learning, maybe she'd have a social
life. If only she weren't such an awkward mess, maybe she could get the attention of that cute girl on the all-star derby
team. And don't get her started on her family!
After the one-two punch of her beloved older brother's departure for college and her parents' overdue split, Millie decides
it's time to reinvent herself. With the help of her new friend Pumpkin and a little bit of deceit, Millie crafts a plan to
cement her status on the team and get her crush to fall for her.
But reinvention isn't easy. Millie's constantly shown up by show-off teammate Stork, and the only way she can get her
crush's attention is through increasingly elaborate lies. Worse, she begins to suspect Pumpkin is not the supportive friend
she'd imagined. Toughest to handle? Realizing the person she's in love with might not be her longtime crush, after all.

9781595989925, $19.95 Hardcover/$14.95 Paperback
https://www.amazon.com/Izzy-Strikes-Gold-Larry-Sommers/dp/B0D9HNDJHT
Twelve-year-old Izzy is just a small-town boy in the ordinary town of Plumb. Aside from his diminutive size and youth (in
comparison to his classmates), Izzy doesn't have a lot going for him... nothing except a brain full of schemes and
dreams.
Even though Izzy appears ordinary, in fact Izzy fields many family dilemmas, from parents who don't quite know how to
be adults to a sister too young to know what's going on and a favorite grandfather who's been relegated to a distant
hospital. Izzy's childhood explorations of the Bottoms, dreams of secret, magical escapades and escapes, and becoming a
spaceman all supercharge the story with action.
Set against the backdrop of the 1950s, this coming-of-age saga for middle-grade readers sparkles with possibility,
opportunities, and moments that drive Izzy into the adult world of practicality from a child's world of dreams. When Izzy
and best friend Collum make an extraordinary discovery that could change their lives, they struggle with adult decisions on
how to manage their fluctuating lives.
Larry F. Sommers excels in strong dialogues that cement the characters and their interactions and intentions. These form
the crux of a compelling drama that moves between magical play and real-world dilemmas, whether adult or from
childhood, bringing middle-graders a fine sense of place, purpose, and growth insights. It's not easy to juxtapose action
with deeper inquiries about values and life progression, but Sommers displays an adept ability to dance between family and
friendships, navigating both milieus through the eyes of Izzy, whose experiences with his parents' fighting challenges him
in different ways.
The atmosphere of family attractions and interactions in the 1950s, whether it be watching Perry Mason and Oh, Susannah
on television or going for a family drive, adds a realistic feel to unfolding physical and psychological discoveries, keeping
kids engaged and interested.
Libraries looking for middle-grade stories steeped in a sense of place, family connections, and schemes to get rich (or, at
least, financially survive) will find that Izzy Strikes Gold! reveals and defines more kinds of riches than young readers (and
many an adult) might initially anticipate. This makes for a delightful journey, indeed.

To Become a Brother

Day Agency Publishing
9781736560464, $9.95 Paperback/$2.99 eBook
https://www.amazon.com/Become-Brother-Beyond-Badge/dp/1736560468
To Become a Brother is a novel that follows young Lucas, whose father was killed in a training accident at an Army base,
devastating his mother and changing their family's happiness and trajectory. Lucas' former association with Mr. Andy, a
firefighter, introduces him to the rigors and experiences of being a firefighter, leading him to formulate this goal for his
own future.
Life changes yet again when he's forced to leave his firefighter friend and home in Abernathy to enter a series of foster
homes after his mother's death, where violence and confrontation rule his days. As he struggles with bullying, instability,
distancing himself from drugs, and constant moves between foster homes, Lucas finds himself ever further from the
comfort of family and the promise of the career which can change his life.
Still, life has a way of coming full circle -- and so it does when Lucas encounters and embraces relationships from earlier
in his life, albeit he is much-changed from the boy he used to be. Lindy Bell does a great job of describing the forces that
buffet young Lucas and change the direction of not only his life and loves, but his psyche.
These are convincingly portrayed in a tale that embraces coming-of-age themes, yet quickly moves beyond them to follow
adult concerns and issues which blossom around Lucas and affect his perceptions and ambitions.
Bell is masterful at crafting a story which works on many different levels as it charts personal growth, interpersonal
relationships, the rising drug situation in schools, and how Lucas becomes a key force in saving others (albeit not in the
way he'd initially envisioned). By building contemporary issues and scenarios into her story, Bell crafts a thoroughly
involving, realistic tale that incorporates a key character from Brotherhood by Fire, the first book in her Beyond the Badge
series, but allows To Become a Brother to stand nicely alone for newcomers.
Libraries seeking young adult novels steeped in contemporary issues, insights on firefighting camaraderie and experiences,
and adult themes of drug dealing and murder will find To Become a Brother filled with exciting twists and insights that are
especially highly recommended for Bell's prior readers. This audience will find Lucas's continued growth and evolution to
be powerful supporters of his introductory role in Brotherhood by Fire, adding history and events that cover how he enters
into adulthood with purpose and passion.

9781941813508, $19.95, HC, 32pp
https://www.amazon.com/Georgia-Jipp-Laura-Beth-Dean/dp/194181350X
Synopsis: Georgia Hoyt Jipp (1926-1987) spent her childhood in and around small airplanes in western South Dakota. She
loved flying. Despite her petite size, she earned her pilot's license at age nineteen. In 1948, at age twenty-two, she married
Richard Jipp. Their wedding took place in an airplane circling above Philip, South Dakota, while wedding guests listened
in on the radio.
A blizzard struck on January 2, 1949, ushering in three months of snowstorms that ranked as the worst in the state's
history. Georgia answered the desperate pleas of ranchers, parents of sick children, and the American Red Cross, flying
over 150 rescue missions during those three long months of snowstorms -- more than anyone else in the state. She was a
blizzard pilot hero!
Critique: Brought to life with the artistry of illustrator Jeannie Bowman, author/storyteller Laura Beth Dean's picture book
story about Georgia Jipp and her heroism as a rescue pilot during three months of South Dakota blizzards in 1949 is a fun

parents took her on her first flight to Brazil. As a little girl, Laura loved flying in all sizes of airplanes, ranging from a
Helio Courier propeller plane, to a Boeing 747 "Jumbo Jet." After an adventuresome childhood in five countries on four
continents, she earned a B.S. in Nursing before settling down with her husband and three children in the beautiful Blue
Ridge Mountains of Southwest Virginia. Surrounded by farms and ranches, Laura appreciates quiet and blizzard-free
adventures as a home health nurse. She is also the author of the children's book, Sweet Potato Moon.
Editorial Note #2: Jeanne Bowman was born (more or less) with a crayon in her hand and never stopped putting marks on
paper (or the walls, to her mother's chagrin). She grew up loving the mountains and forests but has spent the majority of
her life on the plains of Montana and the desert of New Mexico. She has illustrated The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde and
Charlie Russell and the Gnomes of Bullhead Lodge by Emily Crawford Wilson. Jeanne received the 2022 Will Rogers

9780711294967, $19.99, HC, 160pp
https://www.amazon.com/Vincent-Graphic-Biography-BioGraphics/dp/0711294968
Synopsis: 'I know for sure that I have an instinct for color, and painting is in the very marrow of my bones' -- Vincent Van
Gogh
The life of Van Gogh has gone down in legend as the archetypal artist's existence. He was irascible and short-tempered,
hugely passionate and emotional, absurdly talented and, for most of his lifetime, notoriously misunderstood and
under-appreciated. And yet today, we see him as one of the most inventive, influential and admired painters of the entire
Western canon -- an artistic genius.
Taking us through his short but explosive life, "Vincent: A Graphic Biography" by author/illustrated Simon Elliott (and
presented in the style of a graphic novel) paints a vivid picture of Van Gogh's unusual youth, his famous early failures, his
discovery of a new style of painting, his tragic suicide, and the meteoric artistic legacy that followed.
For young readers looking for an introduction to this incredible artist, or searching for a fresh take on his story -- this is
Vincent Van Gogh's life presented in a format that you have never seen it before.
Critique: An informative and fun read from start to finish, this graphic novel format of a biography clearly introduces the
troubled life and extraordinary art of the painter Vincent Van Gogh. While also available in a digital book format (Kindle,
$14.99) for students and non-specialist general readers of all ages who have an interest in the subject, "Vincent: A Graphic
Biography" from Francis Lincoln is an ideal and unreservedly recommended addition to personal, family, highschool, and
community library Biography/Memoir collections.
Editorial Note: Simon Elliott is a criminal barrister, art obsessive and standup comedian. Inspired by Hockney's message
'spring cannot be cancelled', and with time to fill (thanks to Covid), Simon engrossed himself in all things Hockney,
learned how to paint on an iPad and began a journey to create this colourful, joyous and thought provoking biography with
a twist.

Engaging with these Tanakh stories from a young age (with assistance of trusted grown-ups) sets a child's foundation for
future learning, helps develop core values, and sets a foundation for Torah learning in the home and with the family.
With a story loyal to the Tanakh text from author/storyteller Shira Greenspan, alongside beautiful illustrations by Rinat
Gilboa, every page is designed to be appealing and engaging to adults and children alike while sparking an
intergenerational discussion of Torah values.
Each book includes a "Guide for Grown-ups", with a child-friendly glossary (including an explanation of Hebrew terms
used in the story) and a series of reflective questions to launch inter-generational conversations about the story and its
message.
Critique: The four thoroughly 'child friendly' small books (6 x 6 x 4 inches) comprising this boxed set include Eliyahu,
Ruth, Miriam, and Avraham. Each of these four books are fun, informative, and inspiring reads and this box set edition
from Koren Publishers is ideal for gift giving and highly recommended for family, elementary school, middle school, and
community library Judaic Studies/Bible Studies collections for young children.

Synopsis: The Ojibwe people are the largest Indigenous group of Turtle Island, now known as North America, and live
around the present-day Great Lakes. After their land was taken by Europeans, many Ojibwe children were placed in
boarding schools that forbid them to use their native language. Though this led to a decline in fluent speakers, there is a
growing movement to restore the strength of the Ojibwe language.
In Ojibwe culture, a dream catcher (izhi'on) protects people, especially children, from harm by catching bad dreams in its
web and allowing good dreams to pass through the feathers hanging at the bottom.
"Wisdom Weavers" is a picture book introduction for children to the Ojibwe language from an Indigenous perspective.
International speaker, author, and creator of Ojibwe Word of the Day, James Vukelich Kaagegaabaw, presents a selection
of words and phrases throughout the day while his son learns about the Ojibwe tradition of the dream catcher. Created with
children ages 6 to 11 (beginner- to mid-level readers) in mind, Wisdom Weavers is an engaging and accessible way for
children to discover the Ojibwe language and learn key phrases and words like:
How to welcome the morning - Mino-giizhigad
How to say I love you - Gizhawenimin
How to be grateful - Miigwech
How to make an offering - Biindaakoojige
School - Gikinoo'amaadiiwigamig
Tree - Mitig
Backpack -Bimiwanaan
Sun - Giizis -- And more!
"Wisdom Weavers: Explore the Ojibwe Language and the Meaning of Dream Catchers" is an inspiring story features a
total of 73 words and phrases to learn in Ojibwe, introduced throughout the visually captivating and representative scenes
showing an average day in an Ojibwe family from illustrator Marcus Trujillo, a tribal member with the Pueblo of Laguna
in affiliation with the Village of Paraje. Also featuring a brief history of the Ojibwe people and language and a culturally
accurate how-to guide for making a dream catcher at home, Wisdom Weavers immerses young people in a vibrant
traditional culture while helping to keep the Ojibwe language and customs alive.
Critique: "Wisdom Weavers: Explore the Ojibwe Language and the Meaning of Dream Catchers" follows a day in the life
of a young, mixed heritage Ojibwe child and features key words and phrases from the Ojibwe language in the format of an
enchantingly illustrated children's picture book. A fun and informative read from start to finish, "Wisdom Weavers" is a
unique, 'kid friendly', and unreservedly recommended pick for family, elementary school, middle school, and community
library Native American picture book collections for young readers ages 6-11. It should be noted for personal reading lists
that "Wisdom Weavers" is also readily available in a digital book format (Kindle, $9.99) as well.

Those friendships we gain when we are young have an everlasting impact on us. Riley and Emma shared a bond so strong
it lasted throughout their lifetimes. Neither distance nor time weakened the bond between them. Until Riley became ill and
lost her fight. This is a loving story to show us how even the death of a dear friend did not end the friendship. (Ages
9-12)
