Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year 2010 Edition
Charles Brooks, editor
Pelican Publishing Company
1000 Burmaster Street, Gretna, LA 70053-2246
9781589807532 $14.95 www.pelicanpub.com 1-800-843-1724

Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year 2010 Edition is a compilation of the best of the best political and editorial cartoons from (most of) 2009, including a selection of award-winning cartoons. Right-wing, left-wing, and moderate viewpoints are all present in these merciless lambasting of government foibles, political mishaps, current events craziness. From the portrait of small businesses as a short man whose height falls well below a line marked "You must be this tall to be too big to fail", to an aide frankly telling President Obama, "So Congress didn't sign your health care plan into law before their recess. That gives us time to read it," these cartoons capture the defining hot-button issues and moments (a brief text introduction to each category of cartoons helps put the jokes in perspective for those who might be a little out of touch with 2009's headline news). Highly recommended for anyone who loves editorial cartoons, and for public library collections.

From beer that was actually served cold thanks to PX coolers, to cigarettes and chewing gum that GIs could use while flirting with local girls, the PX had an undeniably positive effect on troop morale and overall quality of life. Chewing Gum, Candy Bars, and Beer follows the evolution of the PX throughout World War II, from the perspective of the individuals who ran it and the soldiers that used it, interspersing fascinating anecdotes amid the solid historical chronicle. An excellent addition to American military history shelves, rounding out standard military chronicles with an aspect of military life not often focused upon.

Richard B. McKenzie
Encounter Books
900 Broadway, Suite 601, New York, NY 10003
9781594032455 $25.95 www.encounterbooks.com

Home Away From Home: The Forgotten History of Orphanages is an anthology of essays by learned authors offering surprising insights into America's largely abandoned orphanage system. Today's focus on placing children in foster care (originally intended as only a temporary solution) has its own flaws, resulting in care that has been too inadequate for too many children. Home Away From Home explores the problems with the orphanage system that led to its bad reputation and eventual discontinuation - but also highlights the little-discussed positive aspects to the social institution, notably that it provided a stable environment for young people in need of one. Home Away From Home takes a step further, suggesting that orphanages could once again become a socially beneficial institution to care for children who are difficult (or legally impossible) to place in adoptive families. A thought-provoking account, worthy of consideration and contemplation for readers on all sides of the issue.

Written by the former provost of Columbia University, The Great American University: Its Rise to Preeminence, Its Indispensable National Role, and Why It Must Be Protected is an exhaustive and compelling presentation focusing on the invaluable contributions that American Universities have made to scientific, technological, and societal knowledge - and therefore the wealth and standard of living of the nation. From genetic and medical research, to the convenience of bar codes, to potentially life-saving GPS technology, America's universities have helped to keep the nation on the cutting edge - but that could change (and perhaps already has). Restrictive post-9/11 policies have discouraged talented foreign graduate students from training in America; fallout from the international financial crisis threatens university endowments and state investments; and perhaps most insidious, governmental ideological constraints on freedom of inquiry (especially notable during the Bush administration) threaten to undermine the academic and scientific bedrock of the university system. Appendices listing top-ranked American Research Universities, and an online source of information about university discoveries, as well as exhaustive notes and an index round out this thorough, cautionary account of the benefits universities bring, and how they need to be protected.

True-life teaching vignettes pepper this compendium designed to prepare teachers not only to teach literary skills today, but also to prepare for changes in literacy education tomorrow. "Before the events of September 11, I had been planning to teach the novel 'The Breadwinner', but didn't proceed because of the book's mature content. A year later, a mentor (Larry Swartz) asked whether I had taught the book yet. When I mentioned that it might be too sensitive fro some of my students, Larry suggested that this is exactly why the class should read and discuss it. It proved to be so." Of special note is the author's recommendations to take advantage of technological opportunities to help children get involved in doing their best work, from showing them how to use features of MS Word to encouraging recalcitrant children to tell stories on video. Every writing and literature instructor (including home schoolers!) should read Whatever Happened to Language Arts? and keep it on their personal reference shelf.
