Prophet - the Hatmaker's Son: The Life of Robert Muller
Douglas Gillies
East Beach Press
https://www.eastbeach.org
9780970270535, $24.95, HC, 288pp
https://www.amazon.com/Prophet-Hatmakers-Life-Robert-Muller/dp/0970270534
Synopsis: Robert Muller is recognized as one of the great peacemakers of the 20th century.
He started out as the modest son of a poor hatmaker and was trained to follow in his father's footsteps. Life was simple in the French village of Sarreguemines in the 1930's, but as the tide turned to war, German teens started marching in formation across the Sarre River from Robert's home.
In May 1940, Adolph Hitler invaded France and declared that all residents of Robert's village were now Germans. For the next three years, Robert maneuvered to avoid being drafted into the Nazi army while he studied Goethe, Schiller, and Descartes at the University of Heidelberg and learned to think like a global citizen.
He even harnessed the power of his mind to induce appendicitis on the day before he was to be drafted. When all other options ran out, he fled to Vichy, France, on a midnight freight train, changed his name and joined the French Resistance.
In this dramatic and authorized biography, Robert Muller discovered on the battlefield that he was destined to be a peacemaker. On the night of the liberation of Lyon, Muller stood by a cemetery weeping for the young people whose lives were taken during his service in the Resistance. That night he swore he would devote his life to peace.
After World War II, Muller dedicated his life to the United Nations, where he initiated economic and social programs that changed the world.
Critique: "Prophet - the Hatmaker's Son: The Life of Robert Muller" by Douglas Gillies is the life story of Robert Muller (11 March 1923 - 20 September 2010) who, because of his experiences before and during World War II would go one to become an international global theosophist with the United Nations. Serving with the UN for 40 years and rising to the rank of assistant secretary-general, it was his ideas about world government, world peace and spirituality that led to the increased representation of religions in the UN, especially of the New Age movement. He was known by some as "the philosopher of the United Nations".
Informatively enhanced for the reader's benefit with the inclusion of a two page Appendix (Books by Robert Muller), a two page Bibliography, six pages of Source Notes, the Robert Muller poem 'Decide To Be Peaceful', and a four page Index, "Prophet - the Hatmaker's Son: The Life of Robert Muller" is especially and unreservedly recommended for personal reading lists, as well as community and college/university library Biography/Memoir collections and supplemental United Nations History/Biography curriculum studies lists.
Editorial Note: Douglas Gillies was born in California and raised in Ontario, Canada. He practiced law in the San Francisco Bay Area after graduating from UCLA. He has produced six documentaries, including On the Edge -- a wake-up call, a frank assessment of the state of the world with interviews of Mikhail Gorbachev, Jane Goodall, Ted Turner, Huston Smith, Oren Lyons, and Robert Muller. He began documenting Robert Muller's life in 1994, first interviewing him for television and then producing Passion, an audio program in which Muller talks about the meaning of life and death. He is also the author 101 Cool Ways to Die (2009).

Admiral James Stavridis: Sailor, Scholar, Leader

9781682475201, $29.95, HC, 336pp
https://www.amazon.com/Admiral-James-Stavridis-Sailor-Scholar/dp/1682475204
Synopsis: "Admiral James Stavridis: Sailor, Scholar, Leader" is the biography of Admiral James George Stavridis and provides the life history of a naval admiral, leader and commentator. From his accomplishments in the U.S. Navy and on to his time as Supreme Allied Commander, Europe for NATO, Stanley Carpenter presents the most detailed picture yet of the familiar Admiral James Stavridis. Continuing on to Stavridis's post-Navy career, this book reveals the man who, in and out of uniform, has exemplified an ideal of service -- both in command and as a retired expert on world affairs.
The child of Greek immigrants, the story of James Stavridis takes on the hallmarks of a resolutely American success story. Within the story of his youth and education is a resounding reminder of the importance of service. From the U.S. Naval Academy and on to NATO, Admiral Stavridis' time in uniform provided both an example of duty to country, but also the story of a rise from sailor to leader. As leader, Admiral Stavridis stressed the value of education, and placed a premium on understanding the literature of the profession of arms. His numerous books after his time in uniform attest to the Admiral's unique focus, one which he continues to champion.
Admiral James Stavridis: Sailor, Scholar, Leader offers a compelling portrait of a life of duty, lessons for future members of the sea services, and a richly detailed, uniquely American success story. With a look at his career after his U.S. Navy, this author has presented a full picture of the man, not just the sailor or admiral. Those familiar with James Stavridis from his contemporary writings or appearances on TV will find much to enjoy here, as will those in uniform who will find this volume a succinct and forceful presentation of a rise of a leader through the ranks of the military and beyond.
Critique: Informatively enhanced for the reader's benefit with the inclusion of ten pages of Notes and a thirteen page Index, "Admiral James Stavridis: Sailor, Scholar, Leader" is exceptionally well written, organized and presented, making it an especially and unreservedly recommended addition to community and college/university library American Military Biography/Memoir collections. It should be noted for personal reading lists that "Admiral James Stavridis: Sailor, Scholar, Leader" is also readily available in a digital book format (Kindle, $!6.17).
Editorial Note: Professor Stanley Carpenter served in the U.S. Navy, retiring as a captain with numerous command and senior staff billets. He taught Strategy and Policy at the U.S. Naval War College, retiring as professor emeritus. Holding several academic degrees (PhD, MLitt, and BA with Honors), he publishes widely on military and naval history and leadership topics.
Farmed Out in Ontonagon County

9798989948406, $17.99, PB, 170pp
https://www.amazon.com/Farmed-Ontonagon-County-Patrick-Winton/dp/B0D1389QYF
Synopsis: "You're the man of the house now, Pat."
After learning that a 46-year-old father had dropped dead at the dinner table, a neighbor put his hand on the boy's seven-year-old shoulder and outlined the course of his future. From that moment on, heavy burdens fell on those skinny shoulders.
In 1947, Pat's distraught mother brought her children to her family's rural Finnish homestead in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Pat labored to find ways to support them, but his chronically ill mother had to farm her children out to live with others and work for room and board. When she remarried, they moved to a hardscrabble farm under the critical scrutiny of an abusive stepfather. The day the stepfather stabbed a pitchfork into Pat's back, the boy left, never to return.
Pat struggled for everything he needed, including wrangling with school officials to enter high school without parental permission. To support himself, he found work in the unlikeliest of places - a rough-and-ready carnival, manure piles, and oat fields where he harvested rocks and weeds.
Despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pat excelled academically and was elected student council president.
And then one day the police arrived at school, handcuffed him and hauled him to court for a crime he didn't commit. But for which Pat would ultimately overcome.
Times were very different in postwar America as revealed in Pat Winton's memoir, "Farmed Out in Ontonagon County", which chronicles the boy's journey of hard knocks, hard work, persistence, forgiveness, and a strong belief in the Almighty.
Critique: An inherently fascinating read from start to finish, "Farmed Out in Ontonagon County", the life story of W. Patrick Winton also features a section of B/W historical photos making it an especially and unreservedly recommended pick for community and college/university library American Biography/Memoir collections. It should be noted for personal reading lists that "Farmed Out in Ontonagon County" is also readily available in a digital book format (Kindle, $17.99).

Baskerville
9781399802635, $17.65, HC, 320pp
https://www.amazon.com/The-Company/dp/1399802631
Synopsis: London, 1870. -- Lucy Braithwhite lives a privileged existence as the heir to the fortune of Braithwhite & Company-the most successful purveyor of luxury wallpapers in England and the world over. The company's formulas have been respected for nearly a century, but have always remained closely guarded and cloaked in mystery. No one has ever been able to explain the originality of Braithwhite & Company's designs, or the brilliance of their colours, leaving many to wonder if the mysterious spell-like effect of their wallpapers is due simply to artistry, or perhaps something more sinister.
When Mr Luckhurst, the company's manager, and the man who has acted as surrogate father to Lucy and her invalid brother John since they were children, suddenly dies, Lucy is shocked to discover that there is no succession plan in place. Who will run the company and ensure that it (and her family) continue to thrive?
The answer soon arrives in the form of the young and alluring Julian Rivers, who, unbeknownst to Lucy and John, has been essential to the company's operations for some time. At first, he seems like the answer to their prayers, but as Lucy begins piecing together Julian's true intentions, and John begins seeing distortions-and soon spectral visions-in the house's wallpaper, it becomes clear to Lucy that she must do everything within her power to oppose the diabolic forces that have risen up to destroy her family.
Taking place at the height of the arsenic wallpaper controversy of the late 19th century, "The Company" is an intoxicatingly atmospheric slice of gothic Victoriana, following one woman's fight to preserve all that she holds dear, and her determination to defeat the monsters that surround her.
Critique: Taking inspiration from an historical event, "The Company" by novelist Jon Michael Varese is a compelling and fascinating read from cover to cover. 9781963115154, $18.99, PB, 256pp

Synopsis: The original short stories by Sean Murphy that comprise "This Kind of Man" offers an unvarnished look at life in 21st Century America, excavating the complicated, tender, wild truth of what it is to be a man across generations and relationships. These are stories that interrogate the pressures and tensions of contemporary life, and the ways men grapple with them, often without success. Issues such as marriage, fatherhood, aggression, alcoholism, gender expectations, generational backlash, and the inexorable dread of death, abound.
Many of these stories live within a slow implosion of coping, and often failing, as well as those who refuse to succumb, addressing concerns oft-discussed, or not discussed enough, in mainstream print: gun violence, the recent history of coal country Appalachia, sports-related concussions, illegal immigration (and the jobs many of these ostensibly unwelcome folks are obliged to do), homelessness, and the inability of men to honestly connect or communicate.
Far from excusing or exonerating toxic males, this literary collection locates their violence (toward others, against themselves) in the context of a deadening culture and the false narratives that prevail in an exploitative, zero-sum game capitalist model, where those without are encouraged to quarrel with similarly overworked and underpaid, mostly blue-collar workers. We see that our received notions of manhood and masculinity are inculcated-from the beginning and by design-to ensure willing participation in a system where the overwhelming majority are excluded from the start. We witness the way these dysfunctions are handed down like inheritance, and how every cliche, from fighting to drinking to intolerance of dissent and distrust of others, is a carefully constructed trap, preventing solidarity, empathy, and love (for others, for one's self).
Critique: Iconoclastic, deftly crafted, original, memorable and thought-provoking, each one of the short stories comprising "This Kind of Man" is raised by author Sean Murphy to an impressive level of literary excellence. While also available in a digital book format (Kindle, $7.99, "This Kind of Man" from Unsolicited Press is especially and unreservedly recommended for personal reading lists as well as community and college/university library Contemporary Literary Fiction collections.

Critique: The direct sequel to Out of Body (9780996596312, $9.99 pbk / $2.99 Kindle), Out of Body: Master of the Archons continues the paranormal saga of Harley Baker, whose astral adventures have led him afoul of demons. With the publication of "Midwest Shreds: Skating through America's Heartland", Mandy Shunnarah travels around the region for a deep dive into its skating culture, detailing the activity's long, storied history there and the large and diverse skating community that calls the Midwest home today.
In these pages you will learn how skating has become a form of mutual aid in Iowa, follow hard-core street skaters as they vie to become King of Cleveland, experience the transcendence of skating in a converted St. Louis cathedral, meet the anarchists who've built their own skate paradise, cinder block by cinder block, in southern Ohio, and encounter skaters from Des Moines, Madison, Chicago, West Lafayette, Detroit, and other corners of the Midwest.
With writing that revels in the crunching scrape of hard wheels, the joy of nailing a trick for the first time, and the grit required to fall and get back up again, "Midwest Shreds" illuminates a small corner of Midwest life and offers a portrait of the rich cultural history and diversity that makes the region what it is today.
Critique: While also available for personal reading lists in a digital book format (Kindle, $17.99), this edition of Mandy Shunnarah's "Midwest Shreds: Skating through America's Heartland" must be considered essential reading for fans of skateboarding, rollerskating, and rollerblading. An ideal guide to touring of the Midwest in terms of the sports subculture of skating, "Midwest Shreds" is especially and unreservedly recommended for personal, professional, community, and college/university library Sports & Travel Guide collections.
Editorial Note: Mandy Shunnarah (www.mandyshunnarah.com) is a journalist, essayist, poet, and roller-skating enthusiast who calls Columbus, Ohio, home and whose work has been featured in the New York Times, Electric Literature, the Rumpus, and more.
